History of Geomembranes
Geomembranes have transformed how we conserve water and manage environmental protection. Their evolution reflects decades of innovation, policy shifts, and practical implementation across sectors.
1960s – Early Research & Development
Synthetic liners were first developed as alternatives to traditional materials like clay and concrete for lining canals and reservoirs.
1970s – Industrial Adoption
The use of HDPE liner expanded in landfills and industrial containment due to their superior impermeability and chemical resistance.
1990s – Entry into India
Geomembrane technology began gaining traction in India, with early applications in industrial projects and localized water management.
2000s – Agricultural Boom
India witnessed increased demand for farm ponds and irrigation solutions, leading to wider geomembrane usage in agriculture.
2003 – Introduction of IS 15351
The Bureau of Indian Standards introduced IS 15351, setting quality benchmarks for HDPE geomembrane products in the country.
2008 – Farm Pond Subsidy Programs Gain Momentum
Government-backed subsidy schemes for farm ponds accelerated adoption of geomembranes among farmers.
2010s – Infrastructure & Awareness Growth
Large-scale infrastructure projects and rising awareness of sustainability brought geomembranes into mainstream use across mining, roads, and industrial waste management.
2015 – IS 15351 Revised
IS 15351 was revised to reflect new technical advancements and ensure uniform implementation nationwide.
