AIGMA Takes Shape – A United Platform for Geomembrane Manufacturers

On 21st July 2025, geomembrane manufacturers from across Maharashtra gathered at Pune, for a historic meeting that marked the formal establishment of the All India Geomembrane Manufacturers Association (AIGMA).

Honoring Industry Pioneers

The meeting was more than an administrative milestone—it was also a moment to honor the visionaries and contributors who shaped the growth of the geomembrane industry in India. Heartfelt tributes were paid to Late Chandiram Seth Kalani and Late Nandkumar Garudkar, who were instrumental in laying the foundations of this sector. Industry leader Mr. Dhanraj Shah was recognized for his longstanding contributions, while Mr. Bhupendra Mehta was acknowledged as a pioneer and guiding figure whose leadership and continued presence have played a defining role in shaping the geomembrane industry as a vital part of India’s agricultural water management.

Establishing a Collective Voice

The central purpose of the meeting was to create a credible, transparent, and united body to represent the interests of geomembrane manufacturers at both state and national levels. With unanimous agreement, members resolved to formally establish AIGMA as the industry’s collective voice. The Association appointed its first office bearers, with Mr. Pandurang Sonawane elected as President and Mr. Prakash Rijal elected as Secretary. A founding committee was also constituted to guide AIGMA in its formative phase, ensuring structured governance, accountability, and a clear direction for the future.

It was further resolved that AIGMA would be registered under the Companies Act, strengthening its compliance and governance framework. Members endorsed a sustainable membership structure, equipping the Association with the resources to advocate effectively while upholding high standards of quality and integrity.

Commitment to Farmers and Sustainability

Beyond organizational matters, the meeting reaffirmed the industry’s commitment to farmers and the vital role geomembranes play in strengthening rural livelihoods. Farm ponds lined with HDPE geomembrane were highlighted as a proven solution to help farmers combat drought, conserve water, and ensure year-round irrigation. By enabling reliable water storage, geomembrane-lined ponds allow farmers to protect crops, diversify their practices, and increase incomes—empowering them to build resilience against climate challenges.

The establishment of AIGMA marks a defining moment for the geomembrane industry in India.
